Dental Recommendations For Our Pets
We love our pets and they are as much a part of our family as our children – without the tuition costs! These professional recommendations will help you to maintain your pet’s health with the lowest overall costs and aggravation. If you are interested in additional ways to save money on your pet’s care – check out the resource box on the bottom.
1. Pets Need Dental Care, Too
Don’t count on a bone or bowl of dry food to get your pet’s teeth clean. Just like you, your pet can suffer from gum disease, tooth loss, and tooth pain. And just like you, regular brushing and oral cleanings help keep your pet’s teeth strong and healthy.
“Dental disease is one of the most common preventable illnesses in pets, yet many people never even look in their pet’s mouths.”
It’s estimated 80% of dogs and 70% cats show signs of dental disease by age three, leading to abscesses, loose teeth, and chronic pain. In addition to regular dental cleanings by your vet, periodontal disease can be avoided by proper dental care by owners.
A full workup does involve anesthesia, which sounds extreme but is very necessary. Without it, a thorough cleaning — especially under the gum line — can’t be done.
2. Hamsters, Gerbils, Guinea Pigs (and Other Small Rodents) Need Check-Ups And Dental Care Also.
When it comes to dental care for your pets – do not forget about hamsters and other small rodents that also need to be examined once a year. That’s because their teeth grow continuously and if they don’t line up correctly they will grow sideways and develop sharp points that cut into their gums; as a result your pet will stop eating. Don’t count on keeping an eye on these teeth yourself. Back teeth are usually the problem, and they are all but impossible for you to see.
